Posted 9/3/2008 4:14 PM EDT on democratandchronicle.com - amishjudy's page - After learning yesterday that Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Donolfo has posted the Social Security numbers of THOUSANDS on the County Clerk's Office website, I assumed that once the story broke in August, there would be an immediate acceptance of responsibility on her part, a BIG public apology, and a pledge that her office would IMMEDIATELY remove OUR Social Security Numbers from the County Clerk's website.

FRAUDRED Threat Alerts | So Easy an Intern Can Do It—Before Lunch - County court records make it easy to acquire sensitive personal data - Personal information you consider private can be easily accessed when it’s in the hands of — wait for it — your local government. In Milwaukee, for instance, it’s so simple to access sensitive data that a news intern at WUWM, the local public radio station, was able to gather “thousands of names, Social Security numbers, addresses and telephone numbers.” And that was all from his desk, before lunch, WUWM reported.

I was on vacation when the story broke that Cheryl Donoflo's office had carelessly posted thousands of OUR Social Security numbers on the County's web site.

Rochester D&C - August 31, 2008 - The story about the County Clerk's Office failure to protect Social Security numbers is very upsetting. Why are they allowed to continue to have numbers unprotected? If this were in private industry, the press would be all over it, and the legal system would require immediate action. In my company, we call this our containment process. Immediate steps would be taken to end the exposure, then the more permanent fix would be put in place. Sort of an immediate "stop the bleeding."

Shame on Cheryl for planting her feet and committing herself to inaction. Perhaps Maggie can step in and "save the taxpayers" some money here by getting this taken care of. 8/26/2008 1:33:05 PM

Welcome Monroe County Residents, |
|
Thank you for visiting my website to learn more about my campaign and my experience. I am excited and honored to be running for your Monroe County Clerk. Thusfar, throughout my campaign, many of you have shared your concerns with me regarding the direction of Monroe County and your concerns about the integrity of data and services provided through the Clerk's Office. I look forward to continuing these conversations with voters throughout this campaign, and making certain that your voice is heard. I believe that elected officials serve their community best when they listen to the ideas of their constituents and have an “open government” policy. This website will be updated on a regular basis to keep you informed, enlightened, and current on the important issues facing our County and this campaign. I encourage you to bookmark this site and visit often. I bring over 12 years of experience working in and with the federal government to my campaign for County Clerk. My experience in the federal government began with a career in the White House working for the National Security Council (NSC). I worked in the Office of Records Management where I helped create, track and archive all of the Presidential records that were National Security related. My experience working in NSC records management will be a great asset to the Monroe County Clerk's office, which oversees many County related records including mortgage information, court files for civil and criminal matters, registration of new businesses, and many types of licenses and permits. As a Senior Information Assurance Analyst at SRA International Inc., I have provided computer security consultation services to many different government departments and agencies. I have worked with the Departments of the Interior, Commerce, Homeland Security and also worked with the Environmental Protection Agency. I am currently working with the Department of Treasury helping to ensure that their computer network is safe from cyber-crime. I am dedicated to providing this same high level of experience to the Clerk's office, ensuring that your citizen data is protected from cyber-crimes such as identity theft. Also at SRA, I have been a featured speaker at numerous conferences, meetings, and media events, including the Computer Security Institute's Annual Security Conference, and the RSA Security Conference. My presentations have focused on how organizations can implement a strong computer security management program when faced with limited security resources. I have applied these same principles to government clients to protect their computer networks, which helped government clients save money. You have my commitment that I will apply my knowledge and my experience to the County Clerk's office – implementing a strong computer security program while saving taxpayer money for the citizens of Monroe County - to perform the job you expect and deserve, and to do the job right. Thank you again for your support and involvement. |
